  • Feeling sorry for these people do not help them in the least . It perpetuates the hoarding . Get tough tell her the truth . If you cannot let go of the hoard I cannot help you . She has to want to help herself more than you do. If it is something she will never use again toss it .

  • You're a hoarder.. don't try to make it sound nice by saying you're a collector or my mom says she just likes to shop or she likes to hang onto things in case we need them like nobody's going to wear your dresses for 1980 Mom nobody so don't eat them and see if somebody wants to take them rip them up and make them into something else but nobody in our family is going to wear them I quit hanging on the items that people might actually be able to use now that you just can't possibly figure out I have a plan for these I'm going to do something with them but you never do

  • Ironically, having all this junk go to a good cause just justified her hoarding disorder. The usual rationalization of "it might be good for something someday," was true in this case. She will remember this, use this justification again, and continue to hoard and have the same problem again someday.

  • these people really don't understand that they don't have enough time to have the owner of the house look through and approve every single item. It's gotten to this point and stuff has to be hauled out fast. Not only that but if they see everything they'll keep everything, or most everything. This way they get rid of stuff that the owner of the house had completely forgotten they had and therefore won't miss,

  • The house was filled with stuff. Even trash was collected. If a horder starts to collect empty plastic cobtainers from yoghurt, ketchup and such things that means that the person lost controll over the addiction to collect and spend all the money. Can not go and buy things to collect. Is left with collecting trash and empty containers. That woman is on that level of this illness. She did great. But she might start to collect again soon. Hording is an ADDICTION. It is like any other addiction. Like alkoholism. You can talk someone into getting sober, but that person will return to alcohol quick as a rubbef band. And that is the same with hording. The change needs to come from inside the person. It is very rare that someone wants a change for themselves. But only that way it can work. Still it is a hard life beeing an "anonymous horder" or an "anonymous alcoholic". You are facing that addiction every day.

Also, once she learned of where the items were heading for donations to those misplaced from a fire, she immediately changed her mind about something so small and decided to donate even more. That was a beautiful change.

Unfortunately, I can completely understand and relate. I've personally experienced the total loss of my home to a fire...not just once, but twice!!! The actual structures...gone, then gone again. All the contents...gone, then gone again. But I feel most fortunate that no one got hurt and my dog was safely recovered. With time, your things will come back, too!
